Modern Foreign Languages

Intent

At Palm Bay Primary School, our MFL Spanish curriculum is designed to:

  1. Foster Communication Skills
Encourage pupils to develop their ability to communicate effectively in Spanish, focusing on both spoken and written skills. This includes understanding and using common vocabulary and grammar structures.
  2. Cultural Awareness
Instill a sense of curiosity and appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures. We aim to broaden pupils' global awareness and understanding through cultural exploration and context.
  3. Cognitive Development
Support cognitive development by enhancing problem-solving skills and creativity through language learning. We aim to improve memory, concentration, and critical thinking.
  4. Confidence and Enjoyment
Build pupils' confidence in using a new language and foster a lifelong love for learning languages. We focus on creating a positive, enjoyable, and engaging learning environment.
  5. Foundation for Future Learning
Provide a solid foundation for further language studies, equipping pupils with essential language skills that will benefit them in secondary education and beyond.

Implementation

We follow the Language Angels Spanish curriculum which is designed in alignment with the latest educational standards and includes a wide range of topics that are relevant and engaging for our pupils. When the teaching of Spanish was introduced at Palm Bay in 2023, we ensured that all year groups learnt the basics and have then continued to audit knowledge and skills to regularly assess and ensure that each year group is delivering a curriculum that meets the developing language needs of the pupils. We employ a variety of teaching strategies, including interactive activities, multimedia resources, songs, and games, to cater to diverse learning styles. Regular assessments help track student progress and inform teaching practices. Feedback is provided to support student development and achievement. Our teachers participate in ongoing professional development to stay abreast of the latest language teaching methodologies and curriculum updates. We have a Spanish after-school club for those pupils who would like to expand their Spanish further.

Impact

The impact of our MFL Spanish curriculum will be evident as pupils demonstrate improved communication skills, cultural understanding, and enthusiasm for language learning. We expect pupils to leave Palm Bay Primary School with a strong foundation in Spanish that inspires continued language exploration.
