Religion Education
Intent
At Palm Bay Primary School, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum aims to develop pupils' understanding and knowledge of world religions and worldviews. We strive to promote mutual respect, tolerance, and empathy among our pupils, fostering an inclusive environment where diverse beliefs and practises are appreciated and understood.
Implementation
Teachers follow the Discovery RE scheme which provides the learning objectives and resources and full coverage of the curriculum. This curriculum allows pupils to develop their understanding and skills progressively from one year to the next. It also reflects on prior knowledge and allows children to apply this to other areas of school. The disciplinary strands support this as they can be applied to other subjects and are linked to our school values. We have incorporated P4C into the scheme to enable it to be discussion based learning, giving access to all and ensured it is inclusive of various religions and worldviews to reflect the diverse society we live in. Our teachers modify activities and resources to meet the needs of all students, including those with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), and we foster an inclusive environment that respects and values all religious and non-religious viewpoints.
Impact
As a result of this, the impact on the pupils’ learning is as follows:
- Active engagement within lessons
- Confidence in challenging one other and linking discussions to their own life experiences
- Reflecting on previous knowledge and being able to apply this to other areas of the school
- Show deep thinking and personal reflection in their written or oral work
- Active listening and accepting others' views
- We empower children to use their voices, ask thoughtful questions to demonstrate curiosity and understanding
- Enrichment opportunities, i.e. Holi Festival, which brings the school community together
The religions covered are Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism and Judaism.
