Phonics
We teach Phonics and Early Reading using a scheme called Read Write Inc. Read Write Inc is a holistic approach to Literacy that teaches Phonics in the context of reading and writing. We implemented the programme in September 2015 and it is having a great impact on our children’s literacy attainment and their enjoyment of reading and writing. The percentage of pupils passing the Year 1 Phonics screening check, in 2018, was 76%.
Read Write Inc is taught daily in EYFS and Key Stage 1, building up to a full hour each day. Pupils are grouped together according to their reading stage, which means the teacher can pitch the learning at exactly the right level for them and make sure they are challenged.
Your child will learn their sounds in Reception and will learn to ‘blend’ sounds to read words and ‘segment’ words to spell them. By the end of Reception, your child will be reading whole sentences and simple books and will have the confidence to spell words phonetically.
